UI Dance continues winning ways at national competition
March 25, 2011
The University of Iowa Department of Dance extended its remarkable record of success in the American College Dance Festival Association (ACDFA) competitions -- college dance's March Madness -- winning a spot on the 2011 Gala Concert of the spring-break north-central regional ACDFA conference at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.
"The Second Story," choreographed by graduate student Johanna Kirk and performed by UI dancers, was one of nine works selected for the Gala Concert from among 37 entries.
Before coming to the UI Kirk, who is also a journalist and yoga instructor, performed with the Balance Dance Company and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Columbia University.
Productions from the UI Dance Department have been selected for nearly all regional festival Gala Concerts, and UI dances have been showcased at most of the biennial National College Dance Festivals. Individual UI students have also won top honors at both regional and national festivals.
