UI Theatre Fall 2011 Auditions Aug 25-28

August 24, 2011

Update: Aug 24, 2011

Due to extremely strong demand, we are adding an hour to the General Auditions for fall productions.  If you have not already signed up to audition, there are now slots available from 6:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday.

UI Theatre Fall 2011 Auditions August 25-28

The UI Department of Theatre Arts will hold open auditions for 12 productions and two readings during the first week of classes. These auditions are an excellent opportunity to learn more about UI Theatre and to perform in Mainstage, Gallery, and Workshop productions as well as staged readings.

Auditions for UI Theatre productions are open to everyone. For academic considerations, priority is given to theatre majors first, and then all other students of the University of Iowa. Members of the greater Iowa City community are also strongly encouraged to audition. There are many excellent roles available throughout the year and many non-majors and actors from the surrounding community are cast each season. Occasionally, professional guest actors will also be employed.

"Non-traditional" casting is the norm for all directors in all productions, except those in which race, gender, disability or age is the explicit issue. Casting is "non-traditional" when all roles in a script are open to casting without bias in terms of race, gender, disability or age, so long as the actor can fulfill the artistic requirements of the role.

136 UI students participated in last year's Fall auditions, with 90 roles being cast. There will be over 75 roles available this semester.

Auditions for Spring shows as well as the Iowa New Play Festival will be held in November.

If this is your first time auditioning at the University of Iowa, please join our audition workshop: 6:00 - 7:30 pm, Wednesday, August 24, in Theatre B.  And please share this information with friends and new students.

Specific Needs

In addition to the number of open roles to be cast, we’ve received the following specific needs from the production teams:

Stick Fly: I need a black actor for the 50ish age range. I am completely cast with the exception of the Father and one of the son's.

Mastodon Juan: The show provides a hip, punk commentary on our modern society using the extinction of the mastodons as a parallel. Are we heading in the same direction? Our narrator explores through the select few mastodons left in a metal-and-whiskey infused tale. Role called for: Old Mastodonald: A very regal, pronounced man - Looking for a male actor ages 55-75, open to any number of crude situations, language, rap music, and possible choreography.

American Pride: Barney, a Vietnam War veteran, is visited by a reporter and her lawyer after they learn that in her original interview, Barney did not tell the whole truth. Barney- Male, 60-80
